One Punch Knockout

You’ve heard a lot about the straight up, one punch knockout – the guy at the water cooler keeps bragging about the night at the strip bar when he felled a jealous bouncer with a single punch.

Uh huh.

Don’t be all that skeptical, it’s not that unfeasible of a task.

There is a science behind the knock out punch, and it’s not all that big of a secret. You hit your opponent in the jaw. Shhhh! Don’t tell everyone! Actually, it’s pretty common knowledge that a solid pop to the jaw can sometimes equate to a knock out. The key here is that it’s not a sure thing – if you’re banking on it to save your ass, don’t lay the money down. However, with a little preparation and science in your corner, you can deliver a knockout punch the next time the opportunity presents itself.

Here’s how it all works: Your jaw acts just like a direct line to the brain stem. When the drunken Neanderthal at the downtown bar pops you good, the force travels from your jaw and vibrates through the glenoid fossa and straight into the brain stem. WHAM. Nighty-night. The brain stem doesn’t like being jostled about, so it shuts down the whole conscious portion of your brain.

So what’s the secret to delivering a knock out blow? Your opponent can’t be clenching his teeth. It’s that simple. If he’s got his teeth clenched together, any blow to the jaw is going to be dispersed across the entire skull. If you catch him with a good, hard left while he’s laughing and taunting you, chances are, he’s going down.

The deal is, to do it right, you’ll have to drop him with the first blow. Wham. It’s got to come out of no where and really land on the mark. Sure, it’s nice to talk about knocking out someone out after a few minutes of swinging, but it’s the rare, single punch that you’re looking for. You’re going to have to time it just right, and take your shot while you can, but if you can deliver the coup de grace before a single punch is thrown, you’ve got a perfect story and total bragging rights.
